Nice's Hatem Ben Arfa a 'great talent' - Barcelona's Gerard Pique
Gerard Pique has said that Hatem Ben Arfa would be welcome at Barcelona but insists he has no inside information about the Nice attacker's proposed transfer.
Barcelona have been in contact with Ben Arfa, 29, after the former Newcastle player returned to football in spectacular fashion by scoring 17 goals in Ligue 1 this season.
Ben Arfa said earlier this week that he had not yet decided his future but Barcelona defender Pique, 29, suggested that the France international has the ability to fit in at the Spanish champions.
Pique first crossed paths with Ben Arfa at the 2004 European Under-17 Championship, when a French squad full of future stars like Karim Benzema, Samir Nasri and Jeremy Menez got the better of a Spain team that also included Cesc Fabregas.
Pique scored an equaliser in that game before Nasri netted a late winner for France and the former Manchester United centre back also remembers Ben Arfa from that encounter.
"I don't have any information -- it's a matter for the president and his staff," Pique told L'Equipe Magazine, when asked about Ben Arfa's possible move to Barcelona.
"But yes I know Hatem the player well... I played a final of the European Under-17 Championship against him and France won 2-1 against Spain.
"He's a great talent. He was one of the most important players that France had at the time... and all the players with great talent are welcome at Barca.
"But that doesn't mean that I know something -- I know nothing."
Meanwhile, Ben Arfa was left disappointed on Thursday after only being named on a standby list for Euro 2016.
Ben Arfa's omission was the main talking point in an otherwise predictable squad announcement by France coach Didier Deschamps.
"Firstly, I thank all the people who have supported me from the bottom of my heart," Ben Arfa told Nice's official website.
"Disappointed not to be in the 23 but I still have a blue heart for our country. Whatever happens, I'll be fully committed and the first supporter of the French team.
